Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of integrated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment for obesity based on real-world data. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of patients diagnosed with obesity at the Obesity Department of Hubei Provincial TCM Hospital from January 2023 to December 2023. The data collected included general information (name, age, gender), comorbidities, body weight, and treatment methods during the therapy period. The effect of the TCM integrated intervention program (including traditional Chinese herbal decoction, acupuncture point thread embedding, and TCM fasting therapy) on weight improvement in obese patients was analyzed. Results: Among the comorbidities in 1 468 obese patients, fatty liver disease had the highest proportion (63.42%). After integrated TCM intervention for 1, 2, 3, and 6 months, the percentage reduction in body weight was 3.80%, 5.86%, 8.00%, and 10.00%, respectively. At the 3-month treatment point, 70.28% of patients experienced a body weight reduction of ≥5%, and 34.64% had a reduction of ≥10%. After 6 months of treatment, the weight reduction in patients with severe obesity was the most significant, reaching 13.99%. Furthermore, the weight loss percentage in female patients was better than that of male patients (18.25% vs 12.22%). Conclusion: In real-world clinical practice, the integrated TCM intervention program effectively reduces the body weight of obese patients, with better weight loss effects in female patients with severe obesity compared to males. This provides evidence for the clinical application and promotion of TCM in obesity treatment.
